微软3月27日发布Windows Search 4.0 Preview版本，据称Windows Search 4.0查询响应速度比Vista最初版本内置的要快1/3。
Windows Search 4.0的搜索引擎也被Office Outlook 2007和OneNote 2007所使用。
Windows Search 4.0主要的改进有：
支持加密文件系统Encrypting File System (EFS)
减少在线对e-mail创建索引时对Exchange的影响，取消了本地cache。
改进了索引性能
Windows XP版本更新了更快的previewer
Windows Search 4.0 支持的操作系统包括：
• 32-bit versions of Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
• All 64-bit versions of Windows Vista with SP1
• 32-bit versions of Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or a later version
• All 64-bit versions of Windows XP
• Windows Server 2003 with SP2
• All 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003
• Windows Server 2008
• Windows Home Server
